Over 40% of the US population will have cancer at some point in their lifetime? Share this video for National Cancer Prevention Month – let everyone know how something as simple, safe, and inexpensive as VITAMIN D CAN help PREVENT CANCER!
Key Points
- The randomized controlled trial by Lappe et al. in 2007 had such stunning results for vitamin D, calcium and cancer that it was followed up by a repeat study in 2016; this study was the first RCT of vitamin D and cancer with cancer as the primary outcome, resulting in a 35% lower risk in the treatment group as compared to the placebo group
- Using data from this and 2 other studies and analyzing results by vitamin D level showed a 70% lower risk of all types of cancer for women with vitamin D levels greater than 50 ng/ml compared to levels below 30 ng/ml
- Vitamin D is a safe, inexpensive, effective way to help reduce the risk of cancer. Help us get the word out!
February is National Cancer Prevention Month, and February 4th was World Cancer Day. Have you done your part to share the news about vitamin D and the many studies that have demonstrated lower risk of cancer with higher vitamin D levels? If not, this video is an excellent presentation to share!
In this video, Joan Lappe, PhD, RN, FAAN, from Creighton University, discusses findings from a randomized controlled trial on vitamin D + Calcium vs. cancer. Results found that in years 2-4 of the trial there was a statistically significant, 35% lower risk in the treatment group as compared to the placebo group. A following analysis by serum level found a whopping 70% lower risk of cancer for those with vitamin D levels over 50 ng/ml!
Vitamin D is a safe, inexpensive, effective way to help reduce the risk of cancer. Help us get the word out!

Key Points from the Video
Over 40% of the US population will have cancer at some point in their lifetime – prevention is a priority
Numerous observational studies have shown that if you have higher vitamin D level, cancer risk is lower
There are many mechanisms through which vitamin D helps fight cancer and/or prevent it
A review of how we make and get vitamin D and how it is converted in the body…
The randomized controlled trial by Lappe et al. in 2007 had such stunning results for cancer that it was followed up by another study in 2016; this study was the first RCT of vitamin D and cancer with cancer as the primary outcome
2303 women, 55 years and older, were randomly assigned to either take 2000 IU vitamin D/day with calcium or placebos; average BMI was around 30
Participants were followed for 4 years; cases of cancer diagnosed during the first year were eliminated in the analysis to allow vitamin D levels to rise and have an effect on cancer (the previous study saw effects of vitamin D on cancer after 1 year of treatment); there was a 35% reduction in cancer in the group taking vitamin D compared to the placebo group
Using data from this and 2 other studies and analyzing results by vitamin D level showed a 70% lower risk of all types of cancer for women with vitamin D levels greater than 50 ng/ml compared to levels below 30 ng/ml
Analyzing results by vitamin D level (a more direct measurement of vitamin D intervention) accounted for all inputs of vitamin D, not just what was given in the trial (sun, food, supplements including those taken outside of the study)
Don’t blindly supplement. Know your vitamin D level!
