As we saw in the first of this series, GrassrootsHealth participants reside in 55 countries worldwide. Today, we’ll look at how vitamin D levels vary by location.
Vitamin D levels by country for GrassrootsHealth Participants
Among GrassrootsHealth participants worldwide, the countries with the highest average vitamin D levels are Norway (55 ng/ml; 138 nmol/L) and Switzerland (48 ng/ml; 120 nmol/L). The countries with the lowest average vitamin D levels are Mexico (21 ng/ml; 53 nmol/L), Japan (23 ng/ml; 58 nmol/L), and Singapore (24 ng/ml; 60 nmol/L). The average for both the United States and Canada was 44 ng/ml (110 nmol/L).
Vitamin D levels by state for GrassrootsHealth Participants
Among GrassrootsHealth participants in the United States, the states with the highest average vitamin D levels are Arizona (53 ng/ml; 133 nmol/L), Montana (53 ng/ml; 133 nmol/L), and Wyoming (51 ng/ml; 128 nmol/L). The states with the lowest average vitamin D levels are Mississippi (33 ng/ml; 83 nmol/L) and Delaware (39 ng/ml; 98 nmol/L).
Based on the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which collects health information from a representative sample of individuals living in the United States, the average vitamin D level among U.S. adults is 28 ng/ml (69 nmol/L). A vast majority of GrassrootsHealth participants in the U.S. (83%) have vitamin D levels above the U.S. average.
