One of the questions we have received from our D*action participants is “Are vitamin D sprays as effective as other forms taken by mouth, such as pills and capsules?” This is a concern especially for those who have trouble swallowing pills or who have issues with digestion that make it difficult to break down and/or absorb supplements further along in their digestive tract.
Recent Research on Vitamin D Sprays
A study published this month by Williams et al. compared the response of vitamin D serum levels in participants who took 3000 IU of vitamin D per day in either capsule form or as a sublingual spray, or took a placebo. Participants were assigned evenly with 25 in each of three groups (active capsule and placebo spray, placebo capsule and active spray, or placebo capsule and spray), and serum levels were measured at 6 time points over the course of the 6-week trial. Both the capsule and spray were found to be equally effective at raising the vitamin D serum levels, and while there was an 86% compliance rate with the spray group compared to 96% in the capsule group, the spray was found to be preferred over capsules.
What Does GrassrootsHealth Data Show?
A previous analysis from the data provided by 1,161 D*action participants showed similar results with vitamin D serum level response to intake across 4 different types of vitamin D supplements – gel caps, pills, liquids and powders.
This data supports the use of liquids and sprays as effective methods of vitamin D intake.
